Brooklyn, NY, November 8, 2007: Are Williamsburg hipsters too cool for a songwriting competition? Apparently not! Jezebel Music’s annual event continues to attract an amazing line-up of original up-and-coming talent, local New York stars, and music fans.
For the past five nights, 125 contestants have competed throughout Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to make it to the semifinals of the 4th Annual Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition; 15 have been picked (3 from each night). There’s one more night of the second round, 25 more contestants, at Matchless.
Among the current semifinalists are phenomenal local favorites including Michael Grubbs from Wakey! Wakey!, Jeff Jacobson, solo artist and guitar play for the Undisputed Heavyweights, and Williamsburg darling, Kelli Rae Powell.
Brooklyn may seem like an unlikely place for a songwriter competition. Imagine American Idol, without the glitz and glam, Simon and Paula, and Hollywood bravado. The Williamsburg Live Songwriter competition helps real artists from all over the country convene in authentic creative spaces to pour their hearts and souls out live and in person.
“This year has really demonstrated that this is the coolest event of its kind," said Gabriel Levitt, founder of Jezebel. "Contestants, those that go on to the semis and those that don’t, keep telling me that the WLSC is a great musical event and party. There’s no other competition that shines as bright a light on original songwriting as the WLSC. The semifinals and finals will be the best nights of original music in New York this weekend, and Jezebel Music is honored to help talented artists connect with a wider audience for the fourth year running."
The competition consists of amateur and professional songwriters who sing their own original songs both on the submitted recording and for the live competition and have sold less than 250,000 CD units over the past five years. Sponsors include Sam Ash Music Store and Budweiser. Songwriters will compete for the top prize of $4,000 while gaining exposure to local music lovers, and a panel of industry and tastemaker judges.
